JABREF LINUX SESSION WINDOWS
No prior knowledge of TeX will be assumed but familiarity with Microsoft Windows will be useful for following the demonstrations and participating in the practical sessions.
JABREF LINUX SESSION HOW TO
The sessions will be supported by practical "hands on" labs which will include instructions on how to install the software. The third session will concentrate on creating large documents with bibliography and index (e.g., theses), as well as slides (presentations).

Most of the second session will cover the graphical and mathematical notational aspects of the language. The first session will then cover the basics of document structure and preparation.
JABREF LINUX SESSION DOWNLOAD
We begin by showing how to download and install the MiKTeX distribution and the TeXworks/WinEdt editors, which seamlessly integrate with MiKTeX. This three-evening course will describe the use of LaTeX for typesetting documents.

LaTeX is the de facto standard for the communication and publication of scientific documents. There is a number of CLS entry preview files included in JabRef, which need to be added in the build stage by adding cp buildres/csl/csl-locales/ src/main/resources/csl-locales/ according to the developers. It is open-source, stable and used by many technical publishing companies (including all computer science journals). Unlike WYSIWYG tools such as Word, LaTeX uses plain text files that contain formatting commands. LaTeX is a powerful typesetting system, which is used for producing scientific and mathematical documents of high typographic quality. I have no affiliation with any of the above programs: my answers reflect what works for me.Dates: Thursdays, 13, 20 and 27 February, 2pm to 4pm. If you use Office, then you might want to look at the various extensions that provide interaction with, e.g., bibtex.

If your use ConTeXt, then bibtex is still an option.

If you use TeX, then BibTeX format is the obvious one to use (with the bibtex program of course!). You don't say how you produce documents on your Linux computer. My workaround is to use bibutils to convert the BibTeX file into the XML format used by the Word 2007 bibliography tool (but this still needs a bit of post processing to clear up a confusion between "Journal" and "Periodical" I use a small sed script for this tidying up). My only criticism of JabRef is that its MS-Word 2007 export filter wasn't quite right last time I looked. The BibTeX-Endnote converter is available from and it's so featureful that it can even import BibTeX italics (much easier than trying to italicise within Endnote). To minimise the trauma, you could point out that there's a BibTeX to Endnote converter available that would let him/her bail out if it all gets too much.
JABREF LINUX SESSION UPGRADE
Ideally you want to persuade your colleague to upgrade from Endnote to JabRef. Also, BibTeX files are fairly easy to edit with your favourite text editor. Various reference managers are available that use BibTeX as their base format: my favourite is Jabref (it's a java program so works on Windows and Linux). You will then be able to use bibutils to convert the Endnote-XMl file into various other formats (BibTeX and a few less famous ones as well). Second possibility: Instruct your colleague to save the database (from Endnote) in Endnote's own Endnote-XML format (which is presumably a text representation of the usual Endnote format). Change the default to have The default should be to NOT listen/attempt to connect Document a command line option to ENABLE the listening/connection attempt Randomize the port (store in preferences) when the setting is first enabled. Be aware that Endnote allows you to write your own export filters, and its not hard to write a better BibTeX export filter than the one provided. First possibility: Instruct your colleague to use Endnote's "BibTeX export" filter to export the database in BibTeX format.
